Ethiopia's Muktar Edris finds the answer to beating Mo Farah

Sir Mo Farah claims silver medal in world 5000 metres

It was a glorious win for 23-year-old Ethiopian Edris, the fastest man in the world this year, who had lost all his five previous meetings with Farah.

Victor of 10 consecutive global titles dating back to 2011, the Portland-based British Olympic star shockingly finished second in his last on-the-track IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championship race, a 5,000 meters on Saturday.

The 34-year-old Farah was momentarily demoted to fourth place but as Edris held on for a momentous victory in 13.32.79, he dug as deep as he could to pip Chelimo on the line and finish with silver in 13.33.22, before he was left on the track exhausted and heartbroken.

Mohammed Ahmed, who broke the Canadian record in the men's 10,000m earlier at the championships, finished sixth in what was the best performance ever by a Canadian in the men's 5,000m at the IAAF World Championships.

American Paul Chelimo added world bronze to his Olympic silver, timing 13.33.30. The pack, Farah included, let Tiernan lead by about 10m for a few laps in the closing stages. Kejelcha's early move likely cost him a medal but allowed Edris to "sling-shot", as the announcers put it, past the field.

Just as Farah had clawed back the Aussie, Edris took the opportunity to go and, despite the valiance you would expect, the Briton just didn't have enough this time.

"I knew I was going to beat Mo Farah", the new gold medalist said.

"Mo has many victories but now I have one", Edris said. So many times, you guys have been unfair to me. They (the Ethiopians) had the game plan: one of them was going to sacrifice themselves.

"It's been awesome. It's been a long journey but it's been incredible", said Farah who was embraced by his fans as he made his way around the stadium on a lap of honour. I gave it all.

Edris celebrated by performing Sir Mo's trademark "Mobot" celebration in triumph after crossing the line.

"I am the new champion for Ethiopia".

The Sun on Sunday, never one to miss out on an eye- catching pun, perhaps unkindly went with "Slow Mo".

"I am the next champion".
