EPL: Man City beat Brighton 2-0

Pep Guardiola says City to rein in spending after record outlay of US$500M in his first season in charge

Manchester City's Pep Guardiola was happy with the performance of his squad in Saturday's late Premier League clash as the club defeated Brighton 2-0 away from home.

"Last season in my first press conference we were the favourites so nothing has changed". We tried to make it a young squad and we did it earlier and we are lucky because it would be more expensive now in the last weeks.

"It's going to be tough, very tough".

Manchester City will travel to Brighton at 16:30GMT. There's a gulf between Albion and City. "They have hugely strengthened [Man City]".

"We can take a lot of positives from the game". We are strong defensively and I predict 1-1. More realistically however, Tottenham have contracted the fever that has plagued their North London neighbours Arsenal for years - satisfaction with being in the top four.

"We spent the first three months in the bottom places".

"We make good things last season with the player we had", he said.

"Here every game is a battle, and from my experience - in Barcelona too - it's hard against a newly-promoted club. That is the top (and only) priority, and the club will do all it can to achieve that".

The trip to the coast will be start to what is expected to be a season of pressure for Manchester City, as they head to the AMEX Stadium with many of people expecting the Citizens to begin their title charge tonight. I was manager of Barcelona and Bayern Munich so I can handle that situation.

We played with the best intentions and it was not enough. We are here to win games.

Guardiola said: "It is not just us". I think we're in for plenty of goals and a decent City win.

Although one could say that there was next to learning curve for Conte then as he marched to the Premier League title with no hiccups along the way. But if he wants me to play up front alone, it's his decision. It will be hard for them to stay up, especially the first time around.

Unlike the last season - where Antonio Conte, Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho had entered their first season with Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United respectively and were expected to adjust to their new surroundings - this time around there is expected to be little in the way of a learning curve.

"I am pleased with the business City have done in the transfer window so far". Manchester City: Ederson: 7, Kyle Walker: 7, Danilo: 7, Vicent Kompany: 6, John Stones: 6, Nicolas Otamendi: 7, Fernandinho: 7, Kevin de Bruyne: 7, Sergio Aguero: 8, Gabriel Jesus: 7, David Silva: 7.
