Anti-Google ads pop-up in public places after Google fires James Damore

Googles new head of diversity has rejected an internal commentary from an employee who suggested women don’t get ahead in tech jobs because of biological differences. The dueling memos come as Silicon Valley grapples with accusations of sexism and discr

Google is dealing with a big controversy, after firing an engineer who wrote a contentious memo. That logo emerged over the last few days and went viral on Reddit and Twitter for its implication that Google is an authoritarian regime that represses freedom of speech.

He was sacked on Monday, and the situation quickly escalated. "I engaged in reasoned discussion with some of my peers on these issues, but mostly I was ignored", he wrote, of the initial response to his document.

Damore disagrees with how the company reacted to his post, claiming that he only meant to say men and women differ due to biological reasons and that is why there are not so many female representatives in leadership positions and in the tech industry. "I think what's really inspiring is they did this on their own - basically", Johnson added. In a recent Blind survey, majority of the employees from these firms voted against Google's decision to fire Damore.

Damore focused on the idea of shame in his op-ed.

Google is "a particularly intense echo chamber", he wrote. Public shaming serves not only to display the virtue of those doing the shaming but also warns others that the same punishment awaits them if they don't conform. "For many, including myself, working at Google is a major part of their identity, nearly like a cult with its own leaders and saints". There are about 87,000 Google groups - essentially email lists formed around a central theme - and more than 8,000 discussion groups like "misc" - short for miscellaneous - where employees debate and disagree on topics ranging from the optimal temperature in the office to the brand of laundry detergent the company should use for washing employee towels.

The memo sparked widespread rage and heated debate among employees from various companies including Google, Uber, Yahoo, Airbnb, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon. The memo leaked last weekend and, on Monday, he was sacked.

Damore has been on a media tour, giving interviews to Bloomberg and conservative YouTube host Stefan Molyneux. In an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal called "Why I was sacked by Google", he slammed the company for its attempt to "silence open and honest discussion". Plenty of websites published internal posts and gave personal information on Google employees.
