White Supremacists March At University Of Virginia

Last month KKK members and other white nationalists rallied in Charlottesville Va. calling for the protection of Confederate monuments. A similar rally is planned for Saturday

A few hours after violent encounters between the two groups, a vehicle drove into a crowd of people peacefully protesting the rally.

The Saturday rally was scheduled for noon at Emancipation Park, formerly Lee Park, home to a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee that the city of Charlottesville voted to remove earlier this year. Victor Glasberg, Kessler's attorney, noted the city did not ask for counter-protests planned in Justice Park and McGuffey Parks to be moved.

Local media reports and social media accounts claimed that demonstrators were chanting: "One people, one nation, end immigration".

The Daily Progress in Charlottesville reported that the white supremacists began marching at the college's Nameless Field and ended at the rotunda, where police declared the gathering an unlawful assembly.

Police in riot gear stood shoulder to shoulder behind shields early Saturday afternoon, at times advancing toward crowds, CNN video shows.

Among those expected to attend are Confederate heritage groups, KKK members, militia groups and "alt-right" activists, who generally espouse a mix of racism, white nationalism and populism. It follows last month's Ku Klux Klan rally in the town that drew about 50 Klan members and about 1,000 counter-protesters.

The statue's removal is part of a broader city effort to change the way Charlottesville's history of race is told in public spaces. "Let it only serve to unite Americans against this kind of vile bigotry".

Ellis put some of the blame for the strife in Charlottesville on President Donald Trump and his political agenda.

The original location of Emancipation Park was in jeopardy when the city officials stated that Jason Kessler would have to hold the event at McIntire Park. The federal judge then lifted the emergency injunction Friday.

Alt-right marchers and counter protesters clashed Friday night at the "Unite the Right" torch rally on the campus of the University of Virginia.

"I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the hateful behavior displayed by torch-bearing protesters that marched on our Grounds this evening", she said.

University President Teresa Sullivan issued a tame statement condemning and expressing sadness over the fact that some of the demonstrators espousing the violent eradication of non-white people engaged in acts of violence during the march. The judge made the decision around 8 p.m. on Friday.

Leading white supremacist Richard Spencer echoed Kessler's sentiments and fully supported the rally noting via YouTube, "The Unite the Right rally will take place exactly as planned and the city of Charlottesville and the city of Charlottesville police will just have to deal with it".
