Two shot dead in Kenya election protests

Kenyan police say they shot and killed two people during riots overnight by opposition supporters after President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the victor in elections overshadowed by fraud allegations. The leader of the opposition Raila Odinga garnered 44 percent of the vote. "She was my only hope".

In Nairobi slums loyal to Mr Odinga, police opened fire to disperse protesters who blocked roads and set up burning barricades.

In announcing the results of Tuesday's contest, the election commission said Kenyatta won a second term with 54 percent in balloting it called "credible, fair and peaceful".

Opposition officials have criticized these observers arguing that they had close relations with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In a victory speech, Kenyatta said he was extending a "hand of friendship" to the opposition, which alleged that the election commission's database had been hacked and results were manipulated against Odinga.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media, said Saturday that the bodies were brought to the morgue from the city's Mathare slum, an opposition stronghold. Odinga ran unsuccessfully in that election; he also lost the 2013 vote to Kenyatta and took allegations of vote-tampering to Kenya's highest court, which rejected his case.

An Associated Press photographer says Kenyan police in Nairobi have used tear gas on a large convoy of vehicles carrying opposition officials.

A senior member of the opposition coalition (NASA) James Orengo also claimed police had provoked the violence and urged supporters to stay out of harms way.

He has called for unity following the election, saying "there is no need for violence".

However protests remained isolated today, with several hundred demonstrators engaging in running battles with police who quickly dispersed what Interior Minister Fred Matiangi referred to as "criminal elements".

In Nairobi, a young girl was shot dead by police firing "sporadic shots" at protesters in Mathare, a witness said.

Protests erupted in Odinga's strongholds in western Kisumu county and poor areas of Nairobi nearly immediately after the election results were declared Friday, with gunshots ringing out and fires in the streets.

The election commission affirmed there was a hacking attempt but said it failed, and that Odinga's camp had no right to declare him the victor.
