This is what former Google employee James Damore got wrong

Over 60 women are considering suing Google over claims of sexism and low pay

Damore's anti-diversity memo led many employees to raise questions, and those questions were leaked outside the company, further raising concerns about online harassment.

As controversy continues to swirl around fired Google engineer James Damore and his memo about gender diversity, longtime New York Times columnist David Brooks has placed blame squarely on the shoulders of Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

"We had hoped to have a frank, open discussion today as we always do to bring us together and move forward", wrote Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai in an email.

Some Google employees were said to have been named personally on social media and various websites, prompting concern about whether they could candidly ask questions at the town hall.

But he said that following the online harassment, "Googlers are writing in, concerned about their safety and anxious they may be "outed" publicly for asking a question in the Town Hall".

He said the company will aim to create several other forums "where people can feel comfortable to speak freely".

The decision to cancel the meeting came after the names of Google employees who criticized Damore were made public.

Alt-right sites have gladly taken the personal info of some of these employees who are against Damore's views and published them for everyone to see and use as they wish. As questions for the town hall have been leaked publicly, many employees were afraid that their queries could be construed as a public outing of their sentiments regarding diversity at Google.

In late June, Google announced the hiring of Danielle Brown as its new head of diversity.

"We need to stop assuming that gender gaps imply sexism", Mr Damore wrote in his note, which was widely criticised.

"I would've fired him just for thinking anyone would want to read a 10-page memo in the first place", Huppke writes.

Google, meanwhile, is known best for providing its employees with arguably one of the best working conditions in the world, handing out free meals, massages and fitness classes at its California, USA, headquarters.

Blamed for years for not hiring enough women and minorities - and not welcoming them once they are hired - tech companies such as Google, Facebook and Uber have promised big changes. "I certainly couldn't assign any women to deal with this, a good number of the people you might have to work with may simply punch you in the face".

On Thursday, the highest-ranking question on Dory, a system for Google staff to vote on questions, was from an employee who was anxious they would be harassed or threatened if their opinion was leaked to outsiders.

However, as the discourse around Damore's memo grew, Google appeared to find itself in a challenging position whereby it had to show some action against Damore's polarising opinion.
