Canada sends soldiers to migrant border crossing

Asylum seekers soldiers lend a helping hand

Teams of Canadian soldiers stretched canvas across the metal frames of tents at a camp site near the Quebec-U.S. border Wednesday as they helped fellow authorities cope with the crush of asylum seekers crossing into Canada.

The refugee camp would be able to house up to 500 people and would be built in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Quebec.

The migrants fear the U.S.is becoming less welcoming and have made a decision to try their luck seeking asylum in Canada.

"It is summer, but the nights are cool sometimes, so we want to give these people comfort", he said.

"These will be used as additional shelters for asylum claimants who are waiting to be processed by the CBSA [Canadian Border Services Agency]", said CBSA spokesperson Judith Gadbois-St-Cyr.

Around 250 asylum seekers are arriving each day in Montreal, the largest city in Canada's mainly French-speaking province of Quebec.

Almost 100 soldiers will be in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, across the border from Champlain, New York, on Wednesday to set up the tents and add to temporary facilities already organised by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Canadian Border Services Agency. Military personnel will not participate in security matters, the armed forces said, and most of the soldiers will return to their home bases once the camp is built.

Montreal's Mayor Denis Coderre tweeted last week that during July, as many as 2,500 asylum seekers fled the United States for Quebec.

Thousands of migrants are fleeing the United States for Canada via a remote back road in upstate NY. The delays mean migrants have been forced to wait in an area with no beds, just benches and chairs.

Numerous recent refugee claimants crossing into Quebec are Haitians who have been living in America for years but now face deportation.

The Royal Victoria Hospital, shuttered in 2015 due to age, will also be opened and can accommodate about 320 people.

The Haitians have been living in the United States for several years but now face expulsion after US President Donald Trump said that he would not extend temporary asylum granted to 60,000 Haitians affected by a devastating 2010 quake.

The measure was adopted by former President Barack Obama (2009-2017) administration after the 2010 natural disaster, but now the Department of National Security considers Haiti as a safe country.

The temporary facility is being built in anticipation of a large influx of asylum seekers from the US, said Stephane Malepart, a spokesperson for the Canada Border Services Agency.

The Trudeau government ended its own TPS designation for Haitians previous year, inviting its 3,200 holders to apply for residency on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.
