North Korea : Canadian pastor on way home after release

Canadian PM Trudeau quietly sends national security adviser to North Korea as Trump vows 'fire and fury'

It quoted the person who took the photograph as saying that the flight, which had no number, was carrying Lim, who was released on Wednesday by North Korea on humanitarian grounds.

"I think this has that South Korean Canadian pastor who's being released", the source said, adding that they had seen a large group of Japanese-Koreans and initially thought the flight had been chartered for them.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also confirmed that Hyeon Soo Lim has been released and will soon be reunited with his family.

While Lim and his family and friends are just relieved that he is now back in Canada, one can not ignore the timing of his release, as latest developments between North Korea and the United States have been at an all time low and getting extremely tense.

A source who shared the photo said they believed the flight may have contained the Canadian citizen Lim Hyeon-soo, who was released on Wednesday by North Korea in a surprise move announced by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

"Operational security considerations prevent us from discussing the matter further", it said.

"Pastor Lim's health and well-being remain of the utmost importance to the Government of Canada, and we are working to ensure he receives any required medical attention", Trudeau said in the statement.

It's not known what persuaded the North Koreans to do the decent thing in this case and allow Lim to return home to Canada.

"North Korea is maintaining an affable diplomatic relationship with Canada and probably wants to keep it that way", said Koh Yu-hwan, a professor at Dongguk University in Seoul.

And of course there is the recent rhetoric between U.S President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un after Kim threatened to fly missiles into the island of Guam, a United States Overseas Territory, and Trump's response was anything but restrained, to say the least.

Canada does not have an embassy in North Korea, and has advised against all travel there.

"This resolution was adopted on 5 August 2017 in response to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s ongoing nuclear-weapon and ballistic missile-development activities, in violation and flagrant disregard of previous UN Security Council resolutions", the statement noted. The two countries established diplomatic relations in 2001. He is of South Korean origin.

Among the six, one is a Christian missionary while three are North Korean defectors allegedly abducted by the state's agents, according to reports.

In addition, in August 2011, Canada imposed economic sanctions against North Korea under the Special Economic Measures Act (SEMA).

Concern about North Korea's treatment of foreign detainees has grown since Warmbier's death, days after he was medically evacuated to the United States suffering from serious brain damage.
