The NSE Nifty also remained under pressure as it cracked below the 9,900-mark to touch 9,893.05 points in intraday.

The Sensex, which opened at 31,926.14 points, traded at 31,891.77 points - down 122.42 points, or 0.38 per cent from its previous close at 32,014.19 points.

BSE benchmark Sensex breached its psychological level of 32,000 on Wednesday and shed 216 points or 0.68 per cent to end at 31,797.84, while Nifty50 ended the session at 9,908.05, down 0.71 per cent or 70 points.

Kothari Products lost 3% to Rs 182.50 at 15:12 IST on BSE after net profit fell 53.52% to Rs 7.45 crore on 5.07% decline in total revenue to Rs 1104.08 crore in Q1 June 2017 over Q1 June 2016.

Tension flared up between the U.S. and North Korea over the the latter's ballistic missile programme, which cast a shadow on domestic stocks here.

The BSE market breadth was skewed in favour of bears - with 2,020 declines and 566 advances. "European indices like FTSE 100, DAX and CAC 40 traded lower", said Jasani.

"Major Asian markets ended on a negative note, barring the Jakarta index".

Sentiment remained upbeat in early trade on positive Asian cues and a higher opening in the European shares after strong United States jobs numbers.

In investments, provisional data with the exchanges showed that foreign institutional investors (FIIs) invested Rs 1,539.82 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased stocks worth Rs 798.55 crore. "Except for metal stocks, all other sectoral indices witnessed sell-off", Dhruv Desai, Director and Chief Operating Officer of Tradebulls, told IANS.

Index laggards included NTPC, Dr Reddy's, M&M, Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel, Lupin, Cipla, Hindustan Unilever, Asian Paints, Axis Bank, Hero MotoCorp, HDFC Ltd, Reliance Industries, ITC, ONGC and Sun Pharma, falling up to 1.64 per cent. China's Shanghai Composite also moved up by 0.53 per cent.
