Google Fires a Controversial Diversity Memo Author for Breaking Company Rules

People are so not impressed with Google recruiters right now

Damore's 10-page manifesto, which went viral over the weekend and stirred passions across the political spectrum, accused Google of alienating conservatives at the company and attributed Google's lack of gender diversity to biological differences between men and women.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai had to step in, as the memo climbed up the ladder over at Mountain View, neighboring tech giants, and other startups.

A Google engineer has recently written a memo which sparked a lot of controversy, after claiming biology is what keeps women from enjoying as much success as men in the industry of tech. "The memo has clearly impacted our co-workers, some of whom are hurting and feel judged based on their gender", Pichai wrote in the letter to Google employees. News of Pichai's email surfaced just moments before word that Damore had been fired.

Damore reportedly confirmed his dismissal saying he was sacked for "perpetuating gender stereotypes", and added that he's "exploring all possible legal remedies".

"Violate our code of conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace", Pichai in his memo said. He also said he believes that Google's commitment to hire more women stands to make the company less competitive, and that the gender wage gap is a myth.

"I have a legal right to express my concerns about the terms and conditions of my working environment and to bring up potentially illegal behavior, which is what my document does", Damore said in an interview with the New York Times.

Google has not confirmed whether or not the man's employment has been terminated, saying it does not comment on individual cases.

Former Senior Google employee Yonatan Zunger, wrote that this engineer should have been fired because his memo makes it clear that Damore was a bad engineer.

The controversy has come at a sensitive time for Google, which is under investigation by the United States government after accusations of gender pay inequality, and has been forced to hand over pay records.

If Damore challenges his termination, as he has said he will, he will have the ultimate burden of proving that Google's motive for firing him was illegal.

Research shows companies with women in leadership roles perform better, contrary to Damore's beliefs.

He also said that on average, women have more "neuroticism", as defined as "higher anxiety, lower stress tolerance". Many people called for his head on a platter, and Google delivered. Damore may have the right to voice his opinions, but Google also has the right to decide that they do not want someone with Damore's regressive and offensive attitudes representing their company.
