New Device Can Heal Organs In Less Than A Second

Nano-chip promises to heal organs at a touch

The cargo is delivered by zapping the device with a small electrical charge that's barely felt by the patient.

The process, called Tissue Nanotransfection (TNT), uses a chip loaded with specific genetic code or certain proteins; a cargo that's been designed for cell conversion. "We have shown that skin is a fertile land where we can grow the elements of any organ that is declining", said Chandan Sen, director of Ohio State's Center for Regenerative Medicine & Cell Based Therapies, who co-led the study with L. James Lee, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering with Ohio State's College of Engineering in collaboration with Ohio State's Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center.

A small electric current fires DNA into skin cells to convert them into natural cell building blocks which helps to fix the damaged areas such as arteries and even organs like the heart. Mice with badly injured legs that lacked blood flow were healed within three weeks and blood flow was restored. "This process only takes less than a second and is non-invasive, and then you're off", says Sen.

Well, now you don't have to look any farther than Columbus, Ohio, where researchers from the Wexner Medical Center at the Ohio State University have developed a device capable of repairing organs with a single touch. In a mouse that had leg injuries, within one week the chip caused active blood vessels to re-appear, and by the second week the leg was saved.

Researchers also said that the TNT is not limited on skin cells.

The device has been undergoing testing on mice and pigs, and has been effective 98 percent of the time, an Ohio State news release said.

This breakthrough technology is the first time cells have been reprogrammed in a live body.
The first is the nanotechnology-based chip used to deliver treatment cargo to adult cells in the living body.

Scientists said the procedure is non-invasive and does not require a laboratory, meaning it could be used in hospitals and GP surgeries. The team said they were "surprised" it worked so well. They believe it will be possible to reprogram skin cells to harvest brain cells in a peripheral part of the body, such as the arm, which can then be injected into the brain. For a long time researchers have tried to come up with a mechanism that could treat and even fix brain injuries.

The researchers are awaiting approval from the FDA to conduct human trials.
