Mayo Clinic Named Best Hospital In Nation For 2nd Time

3 Charleston hospitals were named among the best in South Carolina

There a number of hospital rankings - the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Service's Hospital Compare and the Leapfrog Group's safety scores, among others - but the U.S. News report is "the most accessible one", Cosgrove said.

Karen Lancaster, a spokeswoman for the University of Maryland Medical Center, said U.S. News doesn't analyze some areas where the hospital is strong, including transplants and trauma care. This year, UCH has earned the position of No. 15 on the annual U.S. News Best Hospitals Honor Roll, moving up five positions from last year's ranking.

Mayo Clinic finished with 415 points, which is 50 points higher than Cleveland Clinic which was second.

This year, 152 hospitals were nationally ranked in at least one specialty.

U.S. News also recognized the specialty of Rheumatology as "high performing". Hebl said the project is part of a continuing effort to establish the hospital as a regional health center.

University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital earned top-50 status in six out of 10 pediatric specialties, according to the 2017-2018 rankings.

PinnacleHealth Hospitals in Dauphin County ranked twelfth statewide, recognized as high-performing in eight procedures or conditions.

The Mayo Clinic was named the best hospital in the country for the second straight year, followed by the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Nine U-M specialty areas rank in the top 10 in the country: Gynecology (#3), Otolaryngology (#6, 2-way-tie), Pulmonology (#6, 2-way-tie), Geriatrics (#7), Urology (#7), Neurology and Neurosurgery (#8), Ophthalmology (#8), Gastroenterology and GI surgery (#9), and Cardiology and heart surgery (#10). The best hospital for orthopedics is Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

The annual Best Hospitals rankings, now in its 28 year, are created to help patients make informed decisions about where to receive care for life-threatening conditions or for common elective procedures. The "America's Best Hospitals" rankings are accessible online at www.usnews.com/besthospitals and the publication's print edition is scheduled to hit newsstands later this month.

UT Medical was beat out for best in the state by nationally ranked Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Mott was ranked No. 1 in MI and was the only hospital in the state ranked in all 10 pediatric specialties. The hospital's daily census has been near capacity for years, and it has been battling a nursing shortage - relying on hundreds of traveling nurses to fill the gaps.

Changes to this year's scoring methodology mainly sought to include a higher volume of objective data underlying the rankings.
