Gunmen Invade Catholic Church, Kill 47 in Anambra

Why lone gunman mowed down 8 worshippers in Anambra Catholic Church

The governor stated this on Sunday after he visited the scene in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of the state where he condemned the attack he described as a sacrilege.

Earlier reports had said the killings were done by gunmen, with rumours that some Boko Haram elements carried out the attack.

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano has affirmed that the attack on St. Philips Catholic Church in Ozubulu is not a church invasion as reported.

"So far, 12 persons have been confirmed dead and deposited in the mortuary here while several persons are receiving medical attention", said a staff worker at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, where the victims were admitted.

In his reaction, Victor Oye, the National Chairman, All Progressives Grand Alliance, said no amount of provocation could justify the killing of innocent people who had gone to worship in a Church.

This morning at about 0620hrs, we received an information that some armed men invaded St. Philips Catholic Church in Ozubulu where the presiding priest was conduction an early morning mass.

The rebellion has killed at least 20,000 people and forced some 2.6 million others to flee their homes, sparking a dire humanitarian crisis in the country's northeast.

He said that they later went on rampage and shot at the remaining worshippers numbering over 100.

Umar said the attack was carried out by a native of the area.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. "I pray that God grants the soul of the departed eternal rest as I urge the security agents to fish out the perpetrators and make them face the law".

Emecheta, who is the Managing Director of Anambra Signage and Advertisement Agency, said the losses from the attack were too much for the people to bear.

The governor promised to take care of the medical bills and funeral expenses of the victims while stressing that the unfortunate attack was an extension a feud between two members of the community who reside overseas.
