Martin Shkreli Speaks out Guilty Verdict

'Pharma bro' Martin Shkreli found guilty of 3 of 8 charges, including securities fraud

Eccentric former pharmaceutical CEO Martin Shkreli, dubbed "the most hated man in America", has been convicted of fraud for deceiving investors in a pair of failing hedge funds.

He looked over quizzically at one of this lawyers, Marc Agnifilo, each of the three times that Judge Kiyo Matsumoto interrupted a set of "not guilty" announcements she was reading off of the jury's verdict sheet with a "guilty" one. Brafman encouraged the jurors to be "proud" to say "I gave Martin Shkreli a fair trial even though he is Martin Shkreli".

Shkreli was vindicated on the charges identifying with Retrophin, yet indicted making fake deceptions in regards to two mutual funds he ran.

Shkreli's lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, described him as someone who "travels to the beat of a very unique drummer".

Two years prior to this conviction, Shkreli's company Turing Pharmaceuticals acquired the rights to the drug Daraprim and jacked up its price 5,000 percent, from $13.50 to $750 per tablet.

During the course of the five-week trial, Shkreli had boasted on social media that he would outsmart the "junior varsity" prosecution.

"An administrative professional who uses Twitter name "@icterid" joked that Shkreli would be working at the White House soon", trolling a Shkreli post on Facebook last week that he was "in for comms director" after Anthony Scaramucci's short stint in that White House post.

While Shkreli was acquitted of on Retrophin-related count, he was convicted of conspiracy to commit securities fraud in connection with Retrophin.

Boosting drug prices was not why he was on trial, though the defense questioned whether prosecutors would have brought the case if not for Shkreli's reputation. Federal prosecutors had accused the 34-year-old New Yorker of lying to investors in the funds and looting Retrophin to pay them back.

"I think I can get probation".

"There's one statement that's most important and that's the jury's statement: guilty on those counts", said Acting U.S. Attorney Bridget Rohde.

After the conviction, Shkreli said that he was he was glad to be exonerated on numerous charges and "we're delighted in many ways". Shkreli was found guilty of charges that carry maximum prison terms of twenty years.

A federal jury found a split verdict, with the three guilty findings and acquitting the self-style pharma bro of five other criminal counts.

They got the case Monday and were still grappling with it Friday in New York City.

He had faced up to 20 years in prison.
