More and more millennials living with mom and dad

More Canadians are living alone and without children in the home in part due to the aging population newly released data from the 2016 census shows

Childless couples grew in number at a faster rate over the last five years than couples with at least one child, leaving the latter group at 51.1 per cent of the population, the lowest level ever recorded.

The share of Canadians aged 20 to 34 who were living with a parent has increased to 34.7 per cent, according to census data released by Statistics Canada on Wednesday.

The average Grande Prairie household has 2.6 people in it and the average family consists of three people, which is also the provincial average.

The changes are the result of demographic shifts, such as the aging population and an increase in cultural diversity, as well as social, economic and legislative changes. The evolving living arrangements and families of Canadians can also have consequences, for example on the housing market, on caregiving and care receiving and on intergenerational relationships. Census families are defined as married or common-law couples, with or without children, and lone-parent families. In 2016, more than one-fifth of all couples (21.3 percent) were living common law, more than three times the share in 1981 (6.3 percent). That's up from 33.3 per cent in the last census five years earlier and from 30.6 per cent in 2001.

The percentage of one-person households quadrupled in Canada since the middle of the 20th century as the country became increasingly urbanized and large rural families were no longer the norm. The number of people living alone has steadily increased since 1951, from 7.4 per cent to 28.2 per cent. The census found younger Canadians who do have kids are living in places like Alberta, long a magnet for job-seeking families, or Nunavut, where fertility rates are high.

While the percentage of kids living with a mom or a dad has been increasing for decades, the proportion who were living with their father increased by 34.5 per cent between 2001 and 2016, while the proportion who were living with their mother increase by just 4 per cent.

Among Indigenous people in Canada, Cree was the most common- 83,985 people reported that they spoke Cree in their homes in 2016.

Canada's 35.15 million people are getting older; there are now more seniors than children under the age of 14. About 29% of Grande Prairie households are occupied by couples with children. One-third of them were "married".

Traditional married still a majority of couples Married folk are still the majority of couples in 2016, although numbers of common law couples have increased. The number of overall English speakers was up from 2011, while the number of French speakers declined across Canada and in Quebec. The share of young adults living with their own families has dropped to 41.9 per cent in 2016, from 49.1 per cent in 2001.

The proportion of couples living with children has been decreasing for some time.

The proportion of couples living common law was higher in Canada than in the United States, where 5.9% of couples were in non-marital cohabiting unions (in 2010).

Interestingly, the number of people who reported that they spoke an Indigenous language at home was higher than the number who said it was their mother tongue, which reflects the growing interest in learning the languages spoken by Indigenous forebears.

The popularity of marriage is also in free fall across the country, but the trend is even more present in the handsome province.
