Tributes paid to war dead to mark 100 years

Commonwealth War Graves at Tyne Cot on the Ypres Salient Belgium

Here they heard the Last Post, which has been played at the gate by a bugler nearly every evening since 1928, and the commemorations continue today with a special service held at Tyne Cot cemetery, where thousands of soldiers are buried. "One hundred years on, we still stand together, gathering as so many do every night, in remembrance of that sacrifice".

Britain's royals are scheduled to join Belgium's King Philippe and Queen Mathilde on Sunday for a ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres, which is etched with the names of thousands of missing soldiers.

Wreath laying ceremony - Wreaths to be laid by The Sherriff of Lincoln representing the City Council, The President of the City of Lincoln Branch of the Royal British Legion, 158 Sqn RLC, The Royal Naval Association, Lincolnshire Ex Services Association, Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force.

Watched by some 200 descendants of those who fought, he said: "During the First World War Britain and Belgium stood shoulder to shoulder".

King Philippe of Belgium said both countries would continue to honor the soldiers' "immense sacrifice".

The 9th and 15th Scottish Divisions and the 51st Highland Division were deployed for the operation, also known as the Third Battle of Ypres, along with many expat comrades in Scottish battalions from Canada, England and South Africa.

Monday's poignant Last Post was the 30,752nd time it has been played in Ypres since 1928.

Today they revealed a new memorial at the battlefield in Belgium in honour of The Hertfordshire Regiment during the First World War, which saw the death of 620 men and officers in the first two hours of fighting on July 31, 1917. Its opponents included the then-British Prime Minister David Lloyd George, who thought the Allied offensive that began the fighting was misguided.
