Sony's group net profit almost quadruples on year in April-June quarter

"Sales and operating revenue ("Sales") increased by 15.2% compared to the same quarter of the previous fiscal year ("year-on-year") to 1,858.1 billion yen".

Operating income in the current quarter included a 27.5 billion yen gain recorded in the Semiconductors segment resulting from the sale of the entire equity interest in Sony Electronics Huanan Co., Ltd. ("SEH"), a manufacturingsubsidiary in the camera module business.

Music publishing, which consists of Sony/ATV, Sony Japan publishing and its percentage of EMI Music Publishing, produced revenues of $151.7 million (16.86 billion yen), a 7.7% increase from a year ago.

Together, strong performance across Sony's divisions is pushing profit to golden-era levels.

Home entertainment products benefitted from a shift toward high-end TV models with better margins.

Sony's semiconductor division, which includes image sensors, posted an operating profit of 55.4 billion yen, reversing the year-earlier loss of 43.5 billion yen, as operations at a key plant fully resumed to meet brisk demand for image sensors for smartphones.

In April-June this year, camera sales also rose.

For fiscal 2017, attributable net income was 73.3 billion yen or $654 million, operating income was 288.7 billion yen and sales and operating revenues were 7.60 trillion yen or $67.89 billion. During the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 2017) in June, the company confirmed that the sales number was 60.4 million worldwide. This is down from 20 million for the past year.

- Visual and Media, which houses its mobile game apps, saw revenue increase to $435.6 million (48.4 billion yen), up 46.4 percent from the first quarter of 2016 when revenue totaled $305.8 million (33.05 billion yen).
