Trump replaces chief of staff Priebus with general Kelly

Communications director Anthony Scaramucci suggested the chief of staff may be a leaker

White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus walks from Air Force One upon arrival at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, May 17, 2017, after traveling with US President Donald Trump to the US Coast Guard Academy Commencement Ceremony in CT.

That status, as part of what the military calls a Gold Star family, puts him in the administration of a presidential candidate who verbally attacked a Gold Star family: the Khans, Muslim-American immigrants who lost a son in Iraq and had criticized Trump at the Democratic National Convention.

Tonight, while Trump is no longer the star of "The Apprentice" he did appear to have his old TV swagger back while speaking with reporters fresh off Air Force One. Priebus was on the plane with him and left with no comment.

Earlier this week, Scaramucci even seemed to accuse Priebus of leaking material against him, reinforcing the palace intrigue involving the two men inside the Trump orbit.

As Homeland Security secretary, Kelly was tasked with protecting US borders and overseeing immigration policies, two centerpieces of Trump's presidential campaign.

Mr Trump issued his decision just as he landed aboard Air Force One after a visit to Long Island and hours after Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare failed in the Senate.

"I am extremely disappointed", said Robin Hayes, the chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party.

"I resigned, and he accepted it", Priebus said, adding that he had tendered his resignation on Thursday after discussing it with the president for "a few days".

General John Kelly is a lot like Donald Trump.

Priebus said he was proud to serve the administration.

"Mr. President, it is time to look in the mirror, accept responsibility, apologize to the American people, and declare an end to this behavior immediately", Vander Plaats wrote.

That experience prepared him well to take charge of the Department of Homeland Security, a sprawling bureaucracy responsible for border protection and internal security.

Priebus was tapped for the post at the urging of top congressional Republicans - including House Speaker Paul Ryan, a fellow Wisconsinite - who advised Trump that he needed a Washington insider to help him shepherd his legislative agenda. Trumps' already-manic tweeting reached new highs (or lows depending on your view) as he repeatedly went after his own attorney general, Jeff Sessions, for recusing himself from the Russian Federation investigation.

"I think the president wanted to go a different direction", Priebus said.

He also addressed a question about Anthony Scaramucci, the new White House director of communications who disparaged Priebus in an R-rated interview with The New Yorker and claimed he would be "asked to resign very shortly".

He also saluted Priebus, the chief of staff he had just pushed out.

Trump announced the he is replacing his Chief of Staff Reince Priebus with General John F Kelly.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said she did not think Priebus' exit would affect the White House's relationship with the Republican Party.

"Secretary Kelly is one of the strongest and most natural leaders I've ever known", Graham said.
