1 killed, several hurt in Hamburg market knife attack

Hamburg knife attack At least one dead in Germany

A representative of the police press service told Sputnik that it is unclear whether the incident is a terror attack.

While the citizenship of the assailant is now unclear, police spokesperson Timo Zill said the 26-year-old man was born in the United Arab Emirates, but has yet to be identified. Later police said that the perpetrator was a lone wolf attacker.

A 26-year-old assailant made what Hamburg police describe as a "totally unexpected' attack in an Edeka grocery store in Hamburg, where he indiscriminately stabbed seven people with a kitchen knife". Police chief Ralf Meyer said the suspect was "almost exemplary" in this aspect.

Four men suffered stab injuries, while another person was injured trying to overcome the suspect.

One person was killed in the stabbing rampage. The man was then arrested by plainclothes police officers.

The clip shows the alleged attacker surrounded by three men walking slowly towards him.

He also said the attacker, a Palestinian asylum seeker who could not be deported as he lacked identification documents, was psychologically unstable.

"I am furious that the offender is apparently someone who has claimed protection with us in Germany and then directed his hate against us", Scholz said.

A search of the man's room at a centre for asylum seekers turned up no weapons or weapon-like objects, prosecutors said.

"What does it say when they won't release his name?" asked Clare Lopez, vice president of research and analysis at the conservative Center for Security Policy in Washington.

Amri attended classes at Simeonovic's "Madrasa Dortmund", which taught radical ideology and trained jihadis for combat in Syria.

The miscreant soon after the attack reportedly escaped but was later nabbed by the police. But no links to terrorist or Islamist networks on the part of the suspect, who was taken.

A friend had tipped off authorities about changes in the man's behaviour, telling them he had stopped drinking alcohol and started talking about the Koran, said Torsten Voss, head of the Hamburg branch of the domestic intelligence agency.
