HTC's new standalone Vive headset is exactly what VR needs

Samsung Gear VR has helped put the company at the head of the VR pack with about 22 per cent of the global market

It's not clear if the standalone Vive VR headset will make it to European or U.S. markets however, as the HTC press announcement only makes reference to a Chinese launch. The only reason they needed to create this headset for China is due to the fact that Google Daydream content is not permitted in China, so those customers need a different platform to access VR content. After successfully introducing one of the industry's first complete VR systems last year, the company this year revealed additional peripherals and accessories, including the Vive Tracker universal tracking device and the TPCast wireless upgrade.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 is certainly one of the more powerful chips doing the rounds in the smartphone world at the moment - you can find it in Motorola's recent Moto Z2 Force Edition flagship handset - but the setup will certainly be a trade-off for HTC. However, according to TechCrunch, that headset would build on Google Inc.'s WorldSense tracking technology while the China-based headset would be built with Qualcomm's Snapdragon VR tracking tech.

The new headset is set to deliver an outstanding standalone VR experience, making it the best-in-class premium device for this segment in the China market.

What we do know is that it will not require a PC or a phone. It also makes for a cheaper gaming setup as instead of investing in a high-end PC and VR setup, all players will need is to invest in a VR headset. The bad news is that The Vive Standalone has only been announced as exclusive to the Chinese market later this year.

It also allows VR headset makers to create VR experiences customized to their specific VR headsets, which means that headset makers such as Google and HTC can create their own VR platforms and offer these experiences to users.

The company is quiet about the price so it's not known how much the standalone headset is cost, but it's likely going to be lower than the Vive's $800 price tag. The search giant introduced its Daydream VR headset sometime a year ago alongside its flagship smartphones namely, Google Pixel and Pixel XL.
