La'el Collins reportedly gets huge two-year extension from Cowboys

New York Giants defensive tackle Jay Bromley rushes as Dallas Cowboys offensive guard La'el Collins defends during an NFL football game Sunday Sept. 11 2016 in Arlington Texas

On Tuesday it was reported by Mike Garofolo of NFL Network that the Dallas Cowboys and left guard La'el Collins have come to an agreement on a two-year contract extension. Collins was set to make a $615,000 base salary this season.

Collins signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent for a deal worth $1.599 million, which included a $21,000 signing bonus.

Collins was projected as a first-round pick out of LSU in 2015, but the death of a former girlfriend under mysterious circumstances a few days before the draft caused his stock to drop. Suspection regarding Collins quickly disappeared when it was discovered he was in no way connected to the incident but the uncertainty regarding the situation led to him going undrafted. Basically, Collins' fall from grace cost him some serious money. Now, he's expected to dig in as the club's right tackle this season following the retirement of Doug Free.

Only one right tackle - Detroit's Ricky Wagner - now has a contract that pays more than the $7.7 million average that Collins will make in 2018 and 2019.

Now that they've paid him, the Cowboys will be hoping that Collins can stay healthy.

Collins, 23, is coming off a 2016 campaign that saw him miss all but three games after suffering a toe injury.

After starting 11 games during his rookie season, Collins made three starts past year before sustaining a significant big toe sprain.
