China defended Thursday its purchase of iron ore from North Korea following criticism by U.S. President Donald Trump and said it is "strictly and earnestly" complying with United Nations sanctions.

It is the first such offer under South Korea's new president, Moon Jae-in, who signaled his willingness to talk with Pyongyang during his campaign earlier this year.

European Union member states agreed Monday to consider imposing new sanctions on North Korea after it tested its first intercontinental ballistic missile. Maruyama urged all countries to implement United Nations sanctions and called on China and Russian Federation to use their influence to play "an even more constructive role" with North Korea. "We have to put pressure on China", he said. "We are seeing progress there but a lot more has to be done", Johnson told reporters as he arrived for the talks with his counterparts.

The big hope has been that China, North Korea's main trading partner, would take greater actions to cut off Pyongyang's economic lifeline.
