NASA release new Pluto flyby video from New Horizons mission

NASA reveals new high-quality maps of Pluto and its moon Charon

The scientists used the actual New Horizon data and the new advanced elevation models of Pluto planet together with its biggest moon, Charon, to produce stunning movies that gives spectacular new outlook of many odd features that were discovery earlier.

Pluto's haze layer shows its blue color in this picture taken by the Ralph instrument on the New Horizons spacecraft.

New Horizons has moved on from Pluto and is now flying deeper into the Kuiper Belt, a vast area filled with icy bodies out beyond Neptune's orbit.

From there, the flyby footage passes over Sputnik's western border with Cthulhu Macula, which is a dark, craters region located within the nearby highlands.

The video ends in the far east of the encounter hemisphere, an area called Tartarus Dorsa. The spacecraft also collected other data, which helped in understanding the mysterious worlds that exists on the outer frontier of our solar system.

NASA releases new maps of Pluto Charon

NASA also created a video flyover of Charon, Pluto's largest moon, and published maps of Pluto and Charon to mark the flyby anniversary.

The dwarf planet Pluto is extremely cold and topographically dynamic, with water-ice mountains, moving glaciers of molecular nitrogen ice, and a massive moon.

Based on information from the New Horizons spacecraft, this NASA image shows bright snowcap material covering mountains on Pluto, possibly composed of atmospheric methane that has condensed as frost at high elevations.

"The complexity of the Pluto system - from its geology to its satellite system to its atmosphere - has been beyond our wildest imagination", said Alan Stern, New Horizons principal investigator from the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado.

NASA claims the video offers us "a new perspective" of the planet, given that the imagery allowed for a film that gets closer to the planet's surface than New Horizons ever did. Now that it has accomplished that part of its mission, it is currently en route to analyze a Kuiper Belt object, 2014 MU69, and is expected to arrive at its next destination on January 1, 2019.
