Nats get Madson, Doolittle from A's for Treinen, prospects

Washington Nationals Acquire Ryan Madson, Sean Doolittle From Oakland Athletics

The Washington Nationals acquired right-handed pitcher Ryan Madson and left-handed pitcher Sean Doolittle in exchange for right-handed pitcher Blake Treinen, Minor League left-handed pitcher Jesus Luzardo and Minor League infielder Sheldon Neuse. Those numbers, combined with Washington's recent postseason history of dramatic bullpen meltdowns, have made adding relievers a priority in the nation's capital. Though he notched three saves in his first four appearances of the season, the right-hander also allowed three runs and five hits in 3.1 innings. The Nationals interest in numerous relievers has intensified the last few weeks, and we can now add two more to that ever growing list. Washington relievers are last in baseball in strikeouts with 229 in 251.1 innings. Madson will be a free agent at the end of the 2018 season, while Doolittle's contract calls for two team option years in 2019 and 2020.

Though the A's bullpen as a unit has had similar struggles this season to Washington's, Madson and Doolittle were not complicit in those struggles. The Athletics would stand to get a good return for them if they are dealt. This year, he has a 3.31 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 21.1 innings. After all, Madson has plenty of closing experience, including 86 career saves and a 30-save season as recently as previous year with Oakland. The 30-year-old sports a career 3.09 ERA and was named an All-Star in 2014, finishing that year with a career-high 22 saves.

Rizzo said he wasn't sure when Madson and Doolittle would be joining the Nationals. He's also been death on lefties, who are 0-for-23 with 12 strikeouts against him this season.

From a depth perspective, Madson and Doolittle will bring manager Dusty Baker flexibility in the later innings. In 2011, he saved 32 games for the Phillies, while striking out 62 batters in 60.1 innings. The bad news is that those two may not be enough to get them over the top in the playoffs.

To the surprise of many, Madson is the better pitcher this year. Treinen, 29, started the season as Washington's closer and is 0-2 with a 5.73 ERA in 37 relief appearances, allowing opponents a.320 batting average.

Regardless of their age, both Doolittle and Madson join the Nationals after putting together phenomenal seasons for the Athletics while maintaining mid-90s velocity.
