Korea's Park on golf championship win

NZ golfer Lydia Ko makes spectacular comeback in second round at US women's Open

Amy Yang (70) and 17-year-old amateur Choi Hye Jin (70) were tied one stroke back, with long-hitting Korean compatriot Park Sung Hyun (67), a seven-time victor on the Korean LPGA Tour last year, two shots further back. This was the second straight year she was the low amateur at the U.S. Open.

Park hit six birdies and one bogey in the fourth and final round to card an 11-under 277.

However, Park tied for the lead with a 20-foot gain on the 15th.

The two-time runner-up on the LPGA Tour hit an 8-iron close at the 17th and converted, and as she headed to the 18th, was two ahead of Feng and three clear of Choi. Her best previous finish on tour was second place at the Evian Championship as an amateur past year.

"I did not have the best first and second rounds", Park told the LPGA website through a translator.

"I did not have the best first and second rounds so I wanted to believe in myself in the remaining rounds", added Park, whose nickname Dak Gong means "shut up and attack".

As Park departed the final hole, victory in hand, President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump came to the front of viewing platform to acknowledge her. She pumped drive after drive down the middle, driving it well past her playing partner Shanshan Feng, who was the third-round leader.

The 27-year-old from China was joined by Spain's Carlota Ciganda (70) and South Korean Lee Jeong-eun (71) at six under.

Teenager Hye-Jin Choi and perennial Open bridesmaid Amy Yang were tied for second in an event where the South Koreans have shined.

"I was trying to squeeze that distance, and maybe that extra effort somehow ended up in the missed shot", Choi said.

Choi showed her mettle by making birdie at the par-five 15th after a brilliant pitch from deep rough short of the green set up an eight-foot putt.

"Coming to this week, I didn't have any expectation at all. I was sorry I could only get one birdie for them".

"The experience was definitely worth it, because based on that good experience that I had last year, I think I was able to garner the championship this year", Park said through an interpreter.

Park, a rookie on the LPGA Tour, entered the weekend at just one under after shooting 73 and 70 on Thursday and Friday.

"I was putting well on the back nine today". "I thought I hit a really good putt", he said of No. 18.

Choi, the 17-year-old who is the world's No.2 ranked amateur, might have been the most consistent player after bogeying her first hole. After all, she's the only professional women's golfer in history to get a standing ovation from the President of the United States after her first career victory.

South Korean women's golf domination presented a new face on Sunday in U.S. Women's Open victor Park Sung-hyun, whose long-hitting and ultra-aggressive style set her apart from many compatriots.

Inside the ropes, players battled puzzling greens and moody weather.

Korean players dominated the majority of the leaderboard's top 10 at the third major of the year, with Mi Jung Hur and World No.1 So Yeon Ryu sharing third place on seven under.

Starting on the back nine, Feng reeled off a hat-trick of gains from the 11th and picked up further gains on the 17th and 18th to turn in 31.
