Any Delay in Brexit Negotiations With UK Impossible - EU Parliament President

BELGIUM-BRITAIN-EU-BREXIT

Britain and the European Union (EU) launch a new round of Brexit negotiations here on Monday as conflicting views on "divorce" terms cast shadow on the resumption of talks and a feasible deal seems rather hard to reach for now.

Despite concern in Westminster that the government's opposition to a future role for the court has limited its room for manoeuvre, three position papers published last week recommitted Davis to rejecting any continuing role for the ECJ after Brexit.

And his allies blasted Michael Gove for reportedly being behind the "smear campaign" of leaking details from last week's Cabinet meeting.

Mr Barnier said: "We will now delve into the heart of the matter".

The priorities, notably rights for expatriate citizens, how much Britain may owe to the EU budget and how to manage the new EU-UK border, especially with Ireland, are ones both sides want to settle in a withdrawal treaty.

"For us, it's incredibly important we now make good progress", added Davis, who held a first day of talks a month ago to agree an agenda, a year after Britons vote to leave the EU. Earlier in March, British Prime Minister Theresa May had set a two-year timetable for leaving the EU. The Sunday Times cited five unidentified sources as saying Hammond had described public-sector workers as "overpaid" during the cabinet meeting last week, and was criticized by Johnson for the statement.

"I do think on many fronts it would be helpful if my colleagues - all of us - focused on the job at hand", he told the BBC.

David Davis heads to Brussels today for a second round of formal Brexit talks amid signs of cabinet splits over the UK's approach to departing the European Union, according to the Guardian.

Negotiation on the exit bill might be especially tough, following British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson's remark last week that the European Union could "go whistle" over its "extortionate" bill demand.

The group Migration Watch, which argues for lower immigration, said in a report that if the United Kingdom remains in the single market and thus subject to free-movement rules after Brexit, net migration from the European Union is likely to continue at about 125,000 people a year for at least the next decade, keeping overall annual net migration at about 250,000.

The EU has demonstrated increasing confidence in recent weeks, accusing Britain of dithering over whether it wants a "hard" or "soft" Brexit more than a year after the shock referendum that propelled May to power.

On Sunday, the former Tory chair Chris Patten warned that the Brexit deadlock represented one of the bleakest moments in British postwar history.
