Dying Army veteran's last wish: a call from you

Lee Hernandez is suffering from a deteriorative illness but he wants people to send him messages

- An Army veteran on hospice in Texas has a dying request and all it requires is a telephone.

Doctors told Hernandez and his wife Ernestine that there is nothing more they can do except to try to make his final days more comfortable, and a big part of that comfort is to see that he's happy.

When no one did for two hours, he said "I guess no one wants to talk to me". "It really uplifts him", said Ernestine, who reads the text messages and cards to her husband because he is almost blind.

Though the strokes have left him blind, Lee brightens up when Ernestine reads messages and cards to him. Since then, Lee and Ernestine have received a huge number of calls and texts.

He served in the army for 18 and a half years, according to KRON, including a tour in Iraq. His condition is only worsening after three brain surgeries.

In a video posted on her Facebook page on Friday, Lee can be heard saying: "Thank you all for your text messages and phone calls, and for thinking of me and supporting me". Central Time. The number is (210) 632-6778.

Ernestine says "a lot of people call to pray with him". His "speech is not very well, so many people didn't take much interest or want to talk to him".

The 47-year-old has been battling health issues for five years but hit "rock bottom" more than a year ago. Nevertheless, Ernestine said her husband is a "fighter" and has "beaten the odds and his strong will keeps him going". I do not know all the details, BUT what I do know is his wife told me he asked to hold his phone and when she asked why he said, "incase someone calls".

Ernestine took matters into her own hands, contacting a support group to help drum up some phone calls. She also says that while Hernandez may not be able to answer every call due to excruciating pain, that she "wouldn't have it any other way".
