DOJ Announces Largest Health Care Fraud Takedown In US History

BREAKING: DOJ reports 'largest healthcare fraud takedown in history'

The Houston Chronicle identified these individuals as Houston physician Gazelle Craig, who specialized in pain management at the Gulfton Community Health Center, and clinic owner Shane Faithful.

32 suspects were charged in MI for for fraud, kickbacks, money laundering and drug diversion schemes involving US$ 218 million in false claims.

On July 13, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the DOJ Medicare Fraud Strike Force had arrested 412 people for health care fraud over the past week.

In 2015, federal authorities announced the arrest of 243 people on fraud charges totaling $712 million (see 243 Charged in Medicare Fraud Schemes). According to Sessions, the suspects accounted for more than $1.3 billion after making fraudulent billing transactions. In one instance, a Louisiana pharmacist was charged with submitting and causing the submission of $192 million in false and fraudulent claims to TRICARE and other health care benefit programs for dispensing compounded medications that were not medically necessary or induced by illegal kickback payments. He said these individuals allegedly billed Medicare for $164 million in false claims.

Sessions added that s a result of the crackdown, nearly 300 health care providers have been suspended of not banned outright from participating in federal health care programs.

"We are sending a clear message to criminals across the country: we will find you", Sessions threatened. Since the conspiracy began in 2012, more than 74,000 pills were obtained from the forged prescriptions, according to reports. Canada ranks second after the U.S., but when it comes to hydrocodone use, for example, people in the United States use more than 48 times as much of this drug than people in Canada. One in five Medicare beneficiaries who received high doses of opioids had at least one 30 m.g. prescription for oxycodone, the most commonly involved in law enforcement cases.

Last year, approximately 59,000 people in the USA died from drug overdoses, many of them linked to opioid abuse, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

"Last year, an estimated 59,000 Americans died from a drug overdose, many linked to the misuse of prescription drugs".

In May, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, an HHS interagency, granted the Texas HHS Commission $27.4 million in federal funds to combat opioid dependency and boost state efforts at prevention and treatment. States and counties around the country are suing both the manufacturers and distributors of prescription opioids for fueling the addiction epidemic by ignoring suspect surges in orders that can not be justified by local patient populations.
