Nevada Regulators Will Consider Emergency Pot Distribution Rules

Less than two weeks after sales of recreational marijuana kicked off in Nevada, stores are running out of pot to sell, according to the state's Department of Taxation. Since sale of recreational marijuana became legal to people aged 21 and older, business has been brisk. Its voters legalized recreational marijuana use in November and come next January 1 you will be legally allowed to buy marijuana in cities where it's allowed. "As of mid-day Friday, not one distribution license has been issued", Stephanie Klapstein, a spokesperson for the department, told USA Today.

Tourists and locals alike have been lining up in front of Nevada's dispensaries to purchase marijuana since its legalization went into effect July 1. Long lines of customers have formed at dispensaries that until last week had been authorized to sell only medical marijuana.

"Without the ability to make a sufficiency determination, the Department cannot license other marijuana distributor applicants and, therefore, no marijuana or marijuana product can be transferred to a retail store", the department wrote.

Nevada is the eighth U.S. state to fully legalise the sale and purchase of weed for recreational use.

Alcohol wholesalers have the exclusive rights to move marijuana from growers to retailers in Nevada, as part of a temporary court order that was extended in June by a Carson City district judge. Lawful distributors can't get the product to the stores quickly enough The emergency action being contemplated is a relaxation of the rules that will allow new distributors to participate in the marijuana market, rather than only the now approved liquor distributors.

The distribution issue is at the center of a legal fight between the state and Nevada's liquor industry, which sued to get in on the business.

The Nevada Tax Commission responded, with a nod from Nevada Governor Sandoval, and will address the shortage on July 13th with emergency regulations. Several establishments told state officials they expect to run out in the coming days. Sales began on July 1, but 10 days later the dope's dried up.

"Within the first weekend of legal recreational marijuana, sales totaled around $3 million, according to the Nevada Dispensary Association". The statement signed by the governor warns that inaction "will result in many of these employees losing their jobs and will cause this nascent industry to grind to a halt".
