The Hill's John Solomon reports that "more than half" of former FBI Director James Comey's seven memos of conversations with President Trump "have been determined to contain classified information, according to interviews with officials familiar with the documents".
The Hill pointed out that Comey penned a total of seven memos describing his talks with Trump on the Russian Federation case earlier this year and four of them had markings indicating they contained classified material at the "secret" or "confidential" level. "That is so illegal!"
The tweet itself, which was also shared by Trump, said the report "accuses" Comey of leaking "top secret information" to a friend.
"He's usually very jovial, open about these things".
"I was honestly concerned that he might lie about the nature of our meeting, and so I thought it really important to document", Comey said. "He said he wouldn't talk about it or where they were".
But while Trump's cable news obsession might make it easier to identify the source of misleading reports he shares, fact-checking will likely do nothing to stop his supporters on social media from repeating the falsehood.
Mr. Comey admitted under oath before the Senate Intelligence Committee that he leaked memos with the explicit aim to force the appointment of a special counsel.
Comey's memos are now in the hands of Robert Mueller, who is investigating, among other things, whether President Trump obstructed justice in his dealings with Comey, who was sacked in May.
The report appeared to prompt a tweet from Trump, saying what Comey had done was "so illegal".
Comey indicated in his testimony the memos were in his possession when he left the bureau, leaving him in a position to leak one of them through his lawyer friend to the media. He said he believed the documents were his own personal recollections and contained little or no classified information.
The FBI disagreed, claiming all of the memos were deemed to be government documents.
Claims about the classification status of Comey's memos bring us right back to Hillary Clinton's claims that her emails were not "marked classified", and therefore that she lacked knowledge that they were classified when she stored and transmitted them.
In May, Trump fired Comey over the poor handling of the investigation into the Hillary Clinton private server and email scandal. If it did, his admittedly intentional leak may actually have violated more than one Espionage Act statute.
