Interviews to select India coach on Monday

Sourav Ganguly

"We have chose to hold the announcement of the coach".

"Sri Lanka tour is in a week's time, the board headed by [secretary] Amitabh Choudhary and [CEO] Rahul Johri will probably continue with the same set for the time being".

Other than Shastri, the Indian cricket board received applications from Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Dodda Ganesh, Lalchand Rajput, Lance Klusener, Rakesh Sharma, Phil Simmons and Upendranath Bramhachari.

The CAC met on Monday to interview the candidates for the high-profile post.

Shastri, the former director of the Indian team, and Simmons made the most of the extended deadline of July 9 after Anil Kumble chose to step down as the head coach on June 20. But, the CAC's move to defer their announcement hints at a different picture.

Incidentally, Shastri not being present physically during his interview with the CAC past year had been considered disrespectful by one of its members, with his seriousness for the coach's role being questioned.

"Have to give credit to Virat Kohli that he totally stayed out of it (coach selection), didn't give any input on names", Ganguly told reporters. We were also told that the CAC and Kohli were on the "same page" when Kumble was chosen ahead of Shastri previous year.

Addressing the press after the over four-hour process, Ganguly said that the panel had not finalised their selection, but was impressed with the interactions they had with each of the candidates. He has not said any names.

In reply, Ganguly said, "dear Anurag thank u so much ... need u back in Indian cricket". What is important for us is we are not going to play. "The main bit is the players and the coach".

Despite this, it is also learned that the CAC will talk with six of the ten applicants.

Ganguly added that Virat "needs to understand how the coach will operate". "That's the best way forward".

Shastri was India's Team Director from their England tour of 2014 to 2015 World Cup before Anil Kumble was handed a one-year tenure.

Does this mean the CAC wants to rule out an "overbearing" style beforehand?

"I am especially surprised and happy when we heard about how they want to go about the job". In a way, the CAC's caution is understandable after it burned its hands during the Kumble episode.
