England vs South Africa 1st Test, Day 3

South Africa coach Russell Domingo during a nets session at Lords in London England on 4 July 2017

Heino Kuhn, making his debut at the age of 33, could do little about a textbook delivery that swung a touch and left him off the seam before taking the edge on its way to Alastair Cook at first slip.

England have tightened their grip on the first Test against a depleted South Africa by reaching 0-40 in their second innings at tea on day three, for a lead of 145 at Lord's.

The two then came together and halted South Africa's innings by sharing four wickets between them to reduce South Africa to 104 for four, with Ali completing the Test all-rounder's double of 2,000 runs and 100 wickets by striking twice with his off-spin.

South Africa's manful resistance came chiefly via a half-century from the captain, Dean Elgar, as well as an unbeaten 48 from Temba Bavuma but they still trailed by nearly 250 runs at the close.

Ali became the seventh - and second-quickest - English player to pass 2,000 test runs and take 100 test wickets, passing both milestones on Friday.

Root's innings, which ended on 190, was already the highest score by an England captain in his first Test in charge, surpassing Cook's 173 against Bangladesh in 2010.

South Africa reviewed again but, with replays showing the ball had struck Cook outside the line of off-stump when he was trying to play a shot, Indian umpire S Ravi's decision was upheld on this occasion.

Broad's fun was only just beginning, though, and Anderson joined in with a pull for six of his own off Rabada before the No 11 was last out edging an attempted drive behind off Morkel. Broad was able to predict Morne Morkel's intentions all too easily which meant that he smashed two consecutive bouncers over the boundary at square leg.

He got away with a top-edged hook on 34, off Mark Wood, which evaded the leaping Jonny Bairstow but then crunched same bowler through the covers in the following over to move to the brink of his fifty.

Meanwhile, South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada will serve a one-match ban in next week's second Test at Trent Bridge after admitting swearing on day one at Lord's. Although South Africa can deploy a substitute fielder in Philander's absence, the substitute is not permitted to bowl under the Laws of Cricket.

He also took the important wickets of Hashim Amla, Dean Elgar and Gary Balance when it was England's turn to bowl. Broad struck eight fours as well as his two sixes.

But Anderson, England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker, had the final say.

JP Duminy only managed to make 15 runs before he was trapped lbw off the bowling of Broad. I've probably bowled a bit safe the past year or so, and today's the first day I went back to an attacking mindset.
