Unesco recognises Hebron as Palestinian world heritage site

French President Emmanuel Macron says supports two-state solution in Middle East

The vote, held in Krakow, Poland, endorsed a proposal brought by the Palestinians.

Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri described the incident as a "road accident" between a private vehicle and a Palestinian motorbike in a statement, noting that Issa was critically injured in the crash and later pronounced dead at the hospital.

'This time they ruled the Tomb of the Patriarchs is a Palestinian site, meaning not a Jewish site, and it is in danger'.

It "regrets" that Israel would not allow inspectors from the International Council on Monuments and Sites, which advises UNESCO on heritage designations, to access the site and acknowledges that as a result, ICOMOS was not able to "fully evaluate" whether the site "unquestionably" merits the designations.

Israel seized Hebron, together with the rest of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, during the 1967 Middle East War, and has controlled these territories ever since despite global criticism.

- 2009-2013: UNESCO adopted 46 (!) resolutions against Israel, compared to only 1 (!) against any other country (Syria).

The area includes the site known to Jews as the Tomb of the Patriarchs and to Muslims as the Ibrahimi Mosque. It also notes Islamic era architectural developments in the city.

UNESCO spokeswoman Lucia Iglesias confirmed that on a Palestine motion, Hebron's Old Town was put on the agency's World Heritage list and on the list of heritage in danger.

The Palestinians hailed UNESCO's decision as a boost for their strategy of a "diplomatic Intifada", or uprising, persuading the global community that the Palestinians require their own sovereign state in East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

"To disassociate Israel from the burial grounds of the patriarchs and matriarchs of our nation is an ugly display of discrimination, and an act of aggression against the Jewish people", Israel's ambassador to the UN ambassador Danny Damon said.

On Thursday, during a trip organized by Media Central, Jabari told journalists that he did not recognize Jewish ties to the site nor believe that Jews themselves felt a connection to the structure.

Adding a site to the list allows the allocation of immediate World Heritage Fund assistance to the endangered property and alerts the global community in the hope it will join efforts to save the endangered sites. Israel says its guardianship of the site is sensitive to the sensibilities of all three faiths.

"It's true that the political situation [between Israel and the Palestinians] carries an important role, but at the end of the day we receive orders from our leadership and carry them out", said Khaled Cadura, head of the Jenin Communication Unit.

On Tuesday, the heritage committee of UNESCO passed a resolution submitted by the council's Arab states rejecting Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem. But three countries - Poland, Croatia and Jamaica - requested a secret ballot, The Times of Israel reported Friday.

"In the Middle East, mosques, churches, synagogues everywhere else are being bombed - in places where Israel isn't present", the prime minister continued. "Subsequent to Friday's Hebron resolution, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee posted on Twitter, "#UNESCO's second anti-Israel resolution in less than a week".
