Spider-Man Homecoming movie review: Tom Holland makes the superhero likeable

Avengers Age of Ultron- TV Spot 2

That's why a passing reference to Davis's nephew has many comics fans buzzing after having seen the movie last night.

Great films about teenagers are about freedom. Going about his day in custom-made Spider-Man masks, "Petie Parker" embodies "Spidey" and pays homage to the man behind the mask of his favorite childhood superhero, Peter Parker.

But now there's Jon Watts' Spider-Man: Homecoming, which according to critical and fan reactions is the best incarnation of the character yet, one that balances the boyish charm of Peter Parker with the lighthearted humor of the comics as well as the coming-of-age aspects of the Spider-Man mythos. Superheroes basically relinquish their day jobs and normal lives when they decide to serve a higher objective, but a 15-year-old can't do that, even if he does have wicked superpowers. Time passes easily and just when you might worry that you don't actually care about any of the characters, the story throws a great curveball that carries interest to the end. According to Marvel mastermind Kevin Feige, the "original 22-movie arc ends with the untitled Avengers in May of 2019, and then two months later it will be Peter [Parker] and Spider-Man that usher us into the aftermath and how things proceed from there".

He and his best bud, Ned (Jacob Batalon), are kind-hearted nerdy nerds. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Even Liz, Parker's love interest, manages to mostly avoid this stereotype (though Spider-Man does literally save her from a dangling elevator in the Washington Monument at one point).

And in the "hero can only be as good as his villain" department, Holland doesn't get much help from Michael Keaton as businessman Adrian Toomes/Vulture.

Spider-Man: Homecoming does something pretty fantastic with its final scene, and we wanted to dig into a bit. Sure, the entire film is based around whether or not the man in tights will be able to defeat the baddie, but it's also steeped in the peculiarities of being both a superhuman and a near-human. They're just two of the most exciting it's.

Donald Glover stood up and said, "I want to be Spider-Man".

Tom Holland as Spider-Man.

It's taken six tries, but Marvel has finally nailed the spirit of its most iconic character on the silver screen.

It's not all flawless, of course. So why would the guy who just threatened to kill Peter's whole family protect him?

"Spider-Man: Homecoming" is out in theaters nationwide today.

But the homage to Morales goes a little deeper than just a casual, underplayed reference from his uncle. Despite being 21, he looks exactly like a 15-year-old teenager and is ideal at simultaneously acting like he IS Spider-Man, but also angry about having to hide that he's Spider-Man.

Spider-Man is still finding his feet as a superhero, and in an initial scene, he "saves" a bicycle from being stolen but unable to find its owner, leaves it there with a note asking about the rightful owner and requesting others not to steal it.
