Microsoft To Cut Up To 3000 Jobs, Mostly Outside US, Says Report

A PTI report states, "Technology giant Microsoft is undertaking a major reorganisation in its sales and marketing units that will likely see the company cutting about 4,000 jobs from its workforce, mostly outside the USA". According to CNBC, these layoffs amounts to almost 10% of sales division staff and 75% of those will be outside U.S. Microsoft cloud service Azure has seen a rapid progress in last 2 years. Most of the changes would reportedly affect employees outside of the United States. About 75 percent of the layoffs will take place overseas, meaning the company is planning to cut up to around 1,000 US-based employees.

"Like all companies, we evaluate our business on a regular basis", Microsoft's spokesperson said.

Global Equities research analyst Trip Chowdhry said the IT industry was undergoing a "major overhaul" and predicted that layoffs would "accelerate" as part of a shift to the cloud. In some regions, in accordance with local laws and requirements, Microsoft is taking steps to notify employees that their jobs are under consideration. While the company is claiming that it is mobilizing its investments, it is learnt that the move will impact thousands especially in the marketing and sales department.

MICROSOFT HAS CONFIRMED that it's making job cuts across its sales and marketing businesses, with up to 4,000 staffers facing the chop.

Chief executive Satya Nadella has been focusing on the firm's cloud unit, which has been a source of strength for Microsoft.

These changes aim growing cloud computing business as the Microsoft's commercial cloud run rate hit $15.2 billion during the first quarter.

Microsoft's cloud computing division, Azure, has seen modest growth in the recent past and the company is being reorganised to give competition to its rivals in the cloud business - Amazon and Google.

Now there are 1,200 staff working for Microsoft at their EMEA operations base in the capital.
