How JAY-Z's 4:44 album went 'instant' platinum

Jay-Z’s ‘4:44’ is even better than you thought

With the new certified Platinum album, this makes Hov's 13th platinum album plaque, more than any other artist in RIAA's history.

This isn't the first time one of JAY-Z's albums has gone platinum in such a short amount of time. It probably doesn't, because in the case of Jay-Z, it's actually more like the 4th times is the charm, because Jay-Z's new album is all about the number 4.

The rapper, 45, continued, "Shout-out to Jay-Z - he did it again. Another Platinum album adds to an already iconic career", RIAA CEO Cary Sherman said in a statement.

The LP already made headlines earlier this week, as Jay seems to respond to the allegations of infidelity that arose after the release of Beyonce's groundbreaking Lemonade previous year. However, the only way to hear the album is to sign-up for Jay-Z's exclusive streaming service Tidal. Well, it turns out that Jay-Z had done a deal with mobile company Sprint (a major shareholder in his streaming company Tidal), who gave away copies of the album to their subscribers.

According to Billboard, 4:44 will be released on Apple Music and iTunes this week.

"4:44" is now a #Tidal exclusive.

In 2013 the RIAA changed the rules for going gold and platinum and made it possible for artists not to have to wait 30 days to get certification for digital sales. Kendrick's album was released on April 14 and went platinum about a month later on May 20. Since its release, the album has been making headlines for a variety of reasons, including lyrical references to his feud with Kanye West [VIDEO], to his mother's sexuality, and to his disdain for rappers who flash their money on social media.

In the animated film, directed by JAY-Z and filmmaker Mark Romanek, the rapper inhabits the cartoon bodies of some of the most persistent stereotypical representations of black people in USA history.

On Friday, 4:44 was released exclusively through Tidal and was only available to pre-existing subscribers, as well as Sprint customers.
