France Vows to End Sales of Gas, Diesel Cars by 2040

Bulgaria France to Ban All Petrol and Diesel Vehicles by 2040

France aims to end the sale of diesel and gasoline cars by 2040 as part of a five-year climate plan revealed Thursday by the country's new environment minister, Nicolas Hulot, ahead of the G20 summit in Hamburg. He said the goal would put a burden on vehicle manufacturers in France but the government has a few projects which "can fulfill that promise". The government will also end oil and gas exploration in French territory, eliminate coal-fired power plants by 2022 and encourage home owners to produce their own energy.

The newly elected government unveiled an ambitious plan to ban all petrol and diesel vehicles from French roads by 2040. Germany and the Netherlands are among other nations working towards banning fuel-burning cars.

Part of French President Emmanuel Macron's pledge to "make our planet great again", the announcement comes a month after President Donald Trump announced his intention to withdraw the United States from the Paris agreement - a decision Hulot described a catalyst for France.

Right now, according to Reuters, diesel and gas cars comprise about 95 percent of France's new-car market, with EVs comprising just 1.2 percent.

He said the proposals such as the decision to end the sale of fossil fuel powered vehicles was a tall order and would constitute something of a "revolution", but solutions were available and French carmakers would be up to the task.

The move by France in taking on a leadership role in climate change commitments is nothing short of revolutionary and is something that all the world's countries should be emulating.

The comment was a take on USA president Donald Trump's election campaign slogan "make America great again", and was made after Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Paris climate accords, a United Nations (UN) agreement to tackle climate change. India has said it wants all cars sold there to be electric by 2030.

Just 0.6% of new auto registrations across the European Union past year were for pure electric vehicles, compared with 1.1% of new cars sold in France.
