Mamata's allegation baseless, meant to blackmail people: Tripathi

Internet Services Suspended Section 144 Imposed in Basirhat After Violent Clashes Over FB Post

The Ministry of Home Affairs, in a letter, has also sought reports regarding the communal violence in North 24 Parganas's Baduria district and demanded to know the steps taken by the state government to control the situation. Tripathi also advised Banerjee and her cabinet ministers to focus on restoring peace in the state.

A Facebook meme on Prophet Mohammad snowballed into a major communal flare-up in Baduria in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal where angry mobs torched police vehicles, vandalised shops and houses and blocked roads leading to the border town.

Though there was no official confirmation about any casualties during the clashes, the incident triggered an unprecedented spat between Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The internet services has also been disrupted in Baduria.

"Her (CM's) allegation is baseless and meant only to emotionally blackmail the people of West Bengal. As a lawyer, he must be aware of the observation of the Supreme Court (on the relation) between the chief minister and the governor. So whatever he has said is an insult to the people of West Bengal", he charged.

Leader of the Trinamool Congress Legislature Party Partha Chatterjee said that the party has written to President Pranab Mukherjee and Home Minister Rajnath Singh expressing strong reservations to Governor's call.

"The governor has humiliated the Chief Minister and the people of the state".

Mamata Banerjee burst out that the governor acted like a "BJP block president" and humiliated her over the phone, while the governor maintained he couldn't remain a mute spectator while the state burned. "It is wrong to say that Raj Bhawan has become the office of the BJP or the RSS", he said. The talks were confidential in nature and no one is expected to disclose it. Her anger is because the Governor performed his constitutional duty and enquired about the (Baduria) incident.

Communal clashes are not new in Bengal in Banerjee's times.

"He talked big on law and order". These were allowed to take place because of vote-bank politics. "We have also given lot of representations to him, on issues like financial grant from the centre, but he never opened his mouth", he said. "What Mamata is doing is not healthy practice", said BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia. It was a humiliation for not Banerjee but for the model of parliamentary democracy which is in use in this country for 70 years.
