Colorado State hurricane forecasters increase chances for named and major storms

Eyes on a disturbance that could become tropical storm

The system's formation chance through 48 hours is high, at 70 percent.

On Wednesday morning, satellite images showed circulation associated with an area of low pressure over the tropical Atlantic Ocean area, which is centered about 800 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, has become more defined, weather authorities said.

Spaghetti models take this potential system mainly west northwest and the general trend is for it to go north of the Caribbean.

The system did not become better organized on Tuesday but conditions still favor the formation of a tropical cyclone, forecasters said. Tropical moisture blowing in from the Gulf of Mexico will produce even more showers on Thursday and Friday. Three of those hurricanes, forecasters say, will be classified as major, reaching Category 3, 4, or 5 strength.

The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season opened June 1 and runs until November 30.

CSU forecasters are calling for 15 named storms, eight of which will become hurricanes.

Tropical Storms Bret and Cindy formed within days of each other in June, Bret dissipating over South America, while Cindy cane ashore along the Louisiana coastline.

An Invest is simply an area of shower and thunderstorm activity that the National Hurricane Center is investing data and personnel to forecast.

But Cangialosi said one busy month doesn't mean anything in terms of how busy, or not, the rest of the season will be.
