Samsung Electronics to bring over 950 positions to SC

Samsung to open $380 million appliance manufacturing plant in Newberry County

With an aim to tap deeper into the US's large home appliances market, Samsung Electronics said it would invest $380 million in the country to set up new production facility, which is likely to generate about 950 jobs. Despite having a first-ranked 17.3% share of the U.S. appliance market - the world's largest - Samsung has only one semiconductor factory in Texas, and no United States appliance factories.

Samsung and LG washers made outside the country are now under safeguard investigation by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) upon compliant by U.S. washer maker Whirlpool that had lost its top position in the U.S. washing machine market to Samsung Electronics. "We are pleased to serve a company the size of Samsung through our Charleston facilities, and look forward to supporting their long-term success in our state".

In a statement, Samsung Electronics Chief Executive B.K. Yoon said the investment would allow Samsung to "increase the speed with which we can deliver premium home appliances that reflect the regional preferences of our fastest-growing and most important consumer market". "Samsung officials expressed "bewilderment" and confusion over Trump's [statement]", BGR said at the time. According to Hyundai Motor, it is the biggest private fund for pediatric cancer in the US.

The facility will start making home appliances later this year, and will eventually become Samsung's manufacturing hub in the United States, the company said.

Samsung previous year bought Dacor, a luxury appliance brand based in California. Samsung also acquired audio supplier Harman for $8 billion and committed $1.2 billion to US-based R&D and investments for Internet of Things technology.

Samsung already operates a call center employing 800 people in Greenville County, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) away.

Samsung announced plans to build a $380 million manufacturing facility in South Carolina Wednesday, where it will employ close to 1,000 new workers by 2020. Standing are, from left to right, US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Senator Lindsey Graham, Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Lee In-ho and Samsung Electronics US President Tim Baxter.

After the report on the possible Samsung plant in February, Trump tweeted, "Thank you, @samsung!" The president has been pressuring companies, including tech giant Apple, to manufacture more of their devices in the US.

Samsung said in a statement it began "contemplating an expansion" of its USA production about three years ago and initiated discussions with SC in the fall of 2016.

Governor Henry McMaster believes this project will change the very fabric of the rural community.

The state's Coordinating Council for Economic Development has approved job development credits related to this project.
