Bungee jump instructor's poor English lead to teenager's death plunge

Girl fell to death on bungee jump after mishearing Spanish instructor's English

She was also underage and the instructor failed to check her ID or to find out if she had parental permission to make the jump.

A teenager fell to her death when she bungee jumped off a bridge without being secured to anything, after she misunderstood her instructor's "very bad" English, according to court papers.

Vera Mol, 17, was harnessed to a rope atop a bridge in Cabezón de la Sal in Spain, when her instructor allegedly told her, "no jump".

The director of the company will now face prosecution for homicide through negligence, after appealing a court ruling previous year.

The court said Tuesday that a trial in the case had yet to be ordered.

The instructor, who has not been named, has appeared in court accused of causing the Dutch girl's death. Her tether was not yet attached to the bridge.

Ms Mol's death resulted in part from a "misunderstanding derived from the incorrect use and pronunciation of English".

"The use of the poor English "no jump" could perfectly well be understood as an explicit order to jump by the victim", the judgement read.

But the appeal judge said the instructor's level of English was not enough to be guiding foreigners in "something as delicate as jumping into the void from an elevated point".

Two members of a Spanish bungee jumping organisation have been found guilty of reckless manslaughter over the 2015 death of a Dutch teen.

"It's part of a general set of laws that include stopping on a highway to take a picture, as well as leaping off a bridge to do bungee jumping", a government spokesman told El Pais.

Flowtrack, who run the bungee jumping company that employed the man, said it was an accident.
