United Kingdom government pledges more fire survivor funds

Gone Residents leave Taplow tower

Shares of United States aluminum company Arconic tumbled Monday after it announced it would no longer sell cladding for high-rise buildings following the deadly Grenfell Tower fire in London this month.

The company's shares fell as much as 11 percent Monday and closed down 6 percent at $24.01 in NY following weekend news reports that Arconic sold the panels installed on Grenfell Tower knowing they would be used on a high-rise building.

The list of high-rise apartment towers in Britain that have failed fire-safety tests grew to 60, officials said Sunday, revealing the mounting challenge the government faces in the aftermath of London's Grenfell Tower tragedy.

The blaze at Grenfell Tower spread within half an hour and killed at least 79 people, and Mr Javid said the death toll was expected to increase.

For the cash-strapped local councils that manage the public housing buildings - and for the tens of thousands of residents who live in them - the dismal test results have brought an agonizing choice: evacuate without a plan for where people should go next, or allow them to stay and risk another Grenfell.

Arconic Inc said its Reynobond PE panels were being withdrawn over "inconsistencies in building codes around the world". "The issue is they supplied material that was used above their own marketing material's suggested limit", said Seaport Global Securities analyst Josh Sullivan.

The move comes after all 75 buildings in 26 local authorities tested so far across the country failed safety checks.

"We couldn't pack anything because we didn't know where we are going, but hopefully we will get back", she said as she stood outside Swiss Cottage Library, one of the emergency shelters in the shadow of the blocks.

Javid told MPs he was concerned that landlords were not submitting samples for testing fast enough and urged them to send them quicker.

"The government is fundamentally flawed in its use of the BRE to conduct overly simplistic and limited fire test samples and not the complete cladding assembly", said Stephen Mackenzie, a fire risk consultant.

Fire safety experts said the fire at Grenfell Tower was a tragedy that could have been avoided, if warnings had been heeded.

It has also emerged that in Camden, where four blocks were evacuated, more than 1,000 fire doors were missing.

Councillor Debra Coupar, the council's cabinet spokeswoman for communities, said that as none of Leeds's council blocks have the same cladding as Grenfell, the Government does not require the city to take any further action.

It is understood the combustibility test, which no building has yet passed, grades the sample on a fire-resistance scale of one to three, with those in two and three being considered a fail.
