Ronaldo scores, Portugal eases past New Zealand 4-0

Ryan Thomas tries to evade a couple of Portuguese defenders

Portuguese National Team trashed New Zealand 4-0 in the group A match of the ongoing Confederation Cup, in Russian Federation, on Saturday to top the group ahead of Mexico.

Cristiano Ronaldo calmly blasted a high shot past the keeper for his 75th global goal, and minutes later it was two when Bernardo Silva was on hand with a late run in the box to fire past Stefan Marinovic. Andre Silva then added a third goal in the 80th minute as the new AC Milan striker fired into the far corner, after a fine individual run, 0-3.

It was a typically efficient performance from Portugal who never looked in real danger despite a sluggish start.

Juan Carlos Osorio's side finished in second position with seven points behind Portugal (due to an inferior goal difference of +2) who also defeated New Zealand 3-0 to set up a semi-final clash with the victor of Group A.

New Zealand goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic, who helped Unterhaching win promotion from the German fourth division last season, kept the score down with a superb second-half display.

All White coach Anthony Hudson was pleased with the way his team had worked, and said there were plenty of positive to take from the game. "We are building a team that is showing that it can play against any opponent in any situation".

"As a result we created more chances but ultimately we got caught at the end".

Russian Federation were beaten 2-1 by Mexico in Kazan on Saturday meaning they finished third in Group A having also lost to Portugal in Moscow on Wednesday, their only victory coming on the opening day versus minnows New Zealand, ranked 95th in the world.

Russia have been eliminated from their home 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup at the group stage after a 2-1 defeat by Mexico in Kazan Arena, Russia Today reports.

Less successful was Cherchesov's attempt to bolster the midfield by starting Roman Shishkin - usually a defender - in a defensive midfield role against Portugal and Mexico, while 33-year-old ex-Chelsea winger Yuri Zhirkov did his World Cup hopes no favors with a red card Saturday.

"The team played their hearts out and I don't think anyone here tonight or in front of their television sets have any doubts about that".

Chile's Alexis Sanchez, right, and Australia's Jackson Irvine fight for the ball during the Confederations Cup, Group B soccer match between Chile and Australia, at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow, Sunday, June 25, 2017. "We're confident and want to win", said Ronaldo, who picked up his third straight man-of-the-match award in Russian Federation. "If a new bridge appears, nobody writes about it, but if it falls apart, here they are shouting about it, you see". Midfielder Danilo was pushed and tripped trying to meet the ball from a corner. Mexico lost Diego Reyes to injury just before the break when the Espanyol defender rolled his ankle making an innocuous pass. He apparently wasn't sure if he could use his hands and ended up taking too long to commit to the ball with his feet, allowing Lozano to nip in and head it into the open net.

Hector Moreno had the ball in the net in the 61st minute but the Video Assistan Referees ruled the goal out for an offside.
