Michelle Carter Found Guilty Of Involuntary Manslaughter

Michelle Carter listens to defense attorney Joseph P. Cataldo argue for an involuntary manslaughter charge against her to be dismissed at Juvenile Court in New Bedford Mass. Carter is charged with involuntary mans

"Judge Moniz continued stating", that her conduct caused the death of Mr. Roy and that Miss Carter is a youthful offender", Moniz said.

Prosecutors said Carter also told Mr Roy to "get back in" when he got out of his truck. After she knew that he'd passed away, Carter did not tell his family that he'd killed himself, nor did she call police. "And finally, she did not issue a simple additional instruction: 'Get out of the truck'".

WATCH: Carter sobbed as the verdict was handed down. She was allowed to remain free on bail until then because she was a teenager at the time of the suicide.

Carter faces up to 20 years in prison after being convicted. She'll return to court for sentencing on August 3. Roy died when his pickup truck filled with carbon monoxide in a store parking lot in Fairhaven, Conn.

"I think she needs to be held responsible for her actions 'cause she knew exactly what she was doing", she said. Carter wrote in one message, according to AP. She had been on Prozac for years before switching to Celexa three months before Roy's death.

When 18-year-old Mr Roy had second thoughts, she sent him a message saying: "Just do it, babe".

While legal experts say Carter may have encouraged him to take his own life, they had questioned whether it is enough to secure a conviction under involuntary manslaughter.

Roys father said outside court that the family was pleased with the conviction. According to a psychiatrist testifying for the defense, Carter was taking the antidepressant Celexa at the time of Roy's death, which targets the part of the brain in control of empathy and decision-making. When he once got out of the vehicle, Carter texted: "Get the f*** back in".

Prompting rebuke by the American Civil Liberties Union, a MA judge handed an involuntary-manslaughter conviction Friday to the girlfriend of a teen who killed himself after she urged him to do so via text message. You need to do it like you did last time and not think about it and just do it babe. You said you were gonna do it.

Carter ordered him by phone to "get back in". Roy and Carter had been in contact with each while he died. Their relationship consisted mainly of texting and other electronic communications.

During his verdict delivery Friday morning, Judge Lawrence Moniz mentioned the 1816 case of Commonwealth v. Bowen, where a man was found guilty of encouraging a fellow inmate to hang himself ahead of his execution.
