Some House Democrats mull over how to oust Pelosi as leader

'Resolve to keep fighting': Dan Rather wants to see Democrats battle issues — not just Trump

While there were surely many reasons for Ossoff's eventual failure to flip the sixth, his loss has provided Democrats with an excuse to do some necessary soul-searching as 2018 approaches. "That would be very bad for the Republican Party - and please let Cryin' Chuck stay!"

It might be Pelosi's fight for her political life.

In over a decade leading House Democrats, into the majority and out again, Pelosi has beaten back all comers, including last fall when Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan of OH ran against her. Ryan fell well short but garnered dozens of votes, enough to underscore dissatisfaction with Pelosi and with her aging leadership team that has left promising young Democrats with few places to rise. "It still moves voters", Ryan said.

"On immigration, for instance, public opinion had actually become modestly more liberal in the years leading up to Trump - but the Democrats are now nearly an open-borders party, so even modest skepticism about immigration tends to push voters toward the Republicans". Aside from the geriatric character of the House Democratic leadership-Pelosi is 77, Democratic whip Steny Hoyer is 78, and deputy whip James Clyburn is 76-they cited incessant Republican demonization of Pelosi as the personification of Democratic Party liberalism.

Rep. Filemon Vela (D-Texas), who supported Pelosi in the leadership election, argued the minority leader had contributed to Democrats' loss in Georgia. "They don't have Clinton or Obama, so this is what they do".

In 14 years under Pelosi's leadership Democrats have become an ever-shrinking minority that's almost extinct outside of the East and West coasts, big cities and college towns. Even some of the younger democrats are calling for her to leave the leadership. It just makes them disaffected from the leadership in the White House.

But Pelosi continues to command great loyalty from many in the House, and she insisted her position was not in jeopardy.

Pelosi also has a long history of holding her party together through hard votes - enabling former President Barack Obama to shepherd into law a series of Democratic-backed measures in 2009 and 2010 and later forcing Republicans to grapple with the politically damaging divisions within their own ranks. Even President Trump took to Twitter, to mock the infighting between party members, saying, "I certainly hope the Democrats do not force Nancy P out". Ryan made it clear after his failed bid to oust Pelosi in the fall that he wasn't planning to challenge her again and was just supporting the effort. Six months into a Trump presidency they still think they can somehow undo, Democrats still don't realize that their problem is their old and exhausted message and their old and exhausted messengers. Back in November, she was elected for an eighth term as majority leader, but her main rival, Representative Tim Ryan of OH, received 63 of 197 votes cast. More than $50 million was spent on the race in Atlanta's wealthy suburbs, making it the costliest House race in history.

"I feel very confident in the support that I have in my caucus", she said.

Pelosi's staff fought back against the calls for new leadership. On abortion, where public opinion has been stable, Democrats have ditched their old attempts at moderation, undercutting the gains that secularization and the liberal turn on other culture-war issues should have naturally delivered them.

"We don't agonize, we organize", she concluded.

Democrat Ossoff did his best to try to portray his opponent as President Trump in drag. Kamala Harris demanded of Democratic activists at a May state party convention in Sacramento.

She then went on to call herself a "master legislator".
