Smoke on the Water: Images of Castaic Lake Wildfire

Firefighters battle a brush fire in a remote area near Castaic on Saturday

A brush fire by Castaic Lake is now at 60 percent containment, but firefighters are looking at another tough day of battling flames amid triple-digit temperatures and bone-dry brush.

The fire broke out Saturday afternoon in an area with hard access near the 5 Freeway and Ridge Route Road, Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Ron Singleton previously told City News Service. Fire officials said the fire had scorched about five acres by about 2:30 p.m. and spread swiftly to more than 500 acres an hour and a half later.

Some firefighters were transported across the lake in boats, according to the Angeles National Forest.

Shortly before 6:00 p.m., the L.A. County Fire PIO reported via Twitter that the blaze near Castaic Lake has reached 550 acres.

Asked about the heat, Judy said: "Our firefighters are used to working in hot temperatures, especially when they're around the fire".

The fire was reported around 2 p.m. Saturday, according to the LACFD. Almost 400 firefighters and five aircraft are working on getting full containment of the fire on Monday.

June 17, 4:56 p.m.

The ranks of firefighting personnel grew to more than 450 and on Sunday morning found themselves busy putting out "hotspots".

In Palmdale, a 32-year-old heat record was broken on Sunday when temperatures climbed to 108 degrees. "The firefighters will be out there, but there will be no shade for them". The fire, which broke out on Saturday, charred 800 acres and destroyed two outbuildings.

"It's a largely recreational area", Licon said.

"Those fuels burned very quickly", Nathan Judy said.
