Ronaldo summoned to court, Mourinho accused of tax fraud

Spanish prosecutors said on Tuesday they had filed a claim against Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho on two counts of tax fraud dating back to when he coached Real Madrid.

However, Mourinho's representatives Gestifute Media issued a statement on Tuesday evening saying their client had "not received any notification" of the actions by the authorities in Spain, as well as circulating a copy of an official tax document dated July 3, 2015 which covered the periods in question.

The United boss, valued at £61m by the Sunday Times Rich List last month, faces allegations of not paying taxes on image rights during his time as Real Madrid coach, with a lawsuit filed against him by the Public Prosecutor's office in the capital.

Prosecutors said he had failed to declare revenues from his image rights in his Spanish income tax declarations from 2011 and 2012, "with the aim of obtaining illicit profits".

Last week, Ronaldo was accused by a state prosecutor of four counts of tax fraud totaling 14.7 million euros ($16.5 million).

Allegations of tax fraud - which have been denied by the Portugal global - as well as the possibility of seeking a new challenge have brought his time in Spain to question and Ronaldo admits he's keen to see the Red Devils tie up a deal for the reigning Ballon d'Or victor.

In the season just gone he struck 42 times to help them win the Spanish division title for the first time since 2012 and is now focusing his efforts on Portugal at the Confederations Cup.

Real Madrid was not immediately available for comment on the allegations against Mourihno or Ronaldo's hearing.

Both Ronaldo and Mourinho are represented by Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes.

Ronaldo has denied any wrongdoing.

A statement issued by the section for economic crimes of Madrid's provincial state prosecutor's office said its investigations indicated that Mourinho committed tax fraud in 2011 and 2012.

They claim that Mourinho, who took over at United a year ago, failed to declare €3.3 million (RM15.77 million) during his time in the Spanish capital - €1.6 million in 2011 and €1.7 million in 2012. In Spain, sentences of under two-years are often suspended if the convicted person has no previous criminal record.

Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano also agreed a one-year suspended sentence with authorities for tax fraud last year.
