The big victor is Disney and Pixar's "Cars 3", which is speeding to $53.5 million from 4,256 locations, putting it in first place. It is the eighteenth Pixar feature film and the third installment in the Cars film franchise, following Cars 2 (2011).

Disney and Pixar's "Cars 3" is headed for a $51 million-plus U.S. debut, the lowest in the franchise but easily enough to chase the competition off the road and win the weekend.

Pixar's latest movie, "Cars 3", may have won the weekend box office, but that was hardly the most interesting thing that went down at the multiplex the last couple of days.

More newsworthy is the strong second-place finish for Wonder Woman, which held up remarkably well in its third weekend of release with a $41 million domestic take.

Finishing third and beating expectations was the biopic of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur, "All Eyez on Me." which debuted with an estimated $27.1 million domestically. It is also the 16th Pixar movie to open at #1. The ensemble voice cast of "Cars 3" includes Owen Wilson, Cristela Alonzo, Armie Hammer, Larry the Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt, Nathan Fillion, Kerry Washington, and Lea DeLaria. The film has added a further $297.2 million internationally, and will soon overtake 2008's Mamma Mia ($609.8 million) to become the highest-grossing movie from a female director.

"Wonder Woman" has some of the greatest legs in the history of show business.

With 55 percent positive reviews, the other new wide release was the shark-diving horror thriller "47 Meters Down".

And the bachelorette-party comedy, Rough Night, was seventh with $8-million. Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 dropped to ninth-place earning $5 million, bringing its seven-week total to $374.9 million. Lucia Aniello directed the film.
