Tech CEOS visit White House to talk modernizing government

"I think it's pretty telling that the President brings these kind of people together", Spicer said.

Kushner highlighted the efforts of the department of Veterans Affairs to move the agency to electronic health records, by adopting a commercial system that's used by the Pentagon.

In May, Trump asked lawmakers to cut $3.6 trillion in government spending over the next decade, taking aim at healthcare and food assistance programs for the poor in a budget that also boosted spending on defense.

President Donald Trump summoned his technology A-team to the White House on Monday for the first meeting of the American Technology Council, continuing the delicate relationship between his administration and Silicon Valley. They are expected to discuss different issues including shrinking the government, reducing federal employees, improving government services, and eliminating regulations among others.

"[The] Government needs to catch up with the technology revolution", said Mr. Trump, who strolled in at the end of the meeting to greet the tech titans.

Heading the White House effort are Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law and senior adviser who leads the newly created White House Office of American Innovation; and Chris Liddell, a former Microsoft executive and now an assistant to the president. It took a few moments for Kushner to get the attention of the dozens of suited executives gathered in an ornate room at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

It is the first time many Americans have heard Kushner's voice.

Monday's White House event includes working sessions focused on citizen services, cloud computing, analytics, cybersecurity, big data, purchasing and contract reform, talent recruitment and retraining, government and private sector partnerships, H1-B visas and future trends, according to a White House official. In the case of the Tesla and Space X CEO and founder, Elon Musk left presidential councils after Trump withdrew from the Paris deal.

In addition, Trump hasn't filled several top technology positions within the federal government, including those of chief technology officer and director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG) is also attending the meeting.

"We're embracing big change, bold thinking, and outsider perspectives to transform government and make it the way it should be". T-Mobile said "senior" executives would be at the White House summit, but didn't provide specifics.
