Darjeeling crisis: GJM chief Bimal Gurung threatens to intensify stir

GJM demands CBI and Judicial probe into violence in Darjeeling; Fresh FIR against Gurung

All the elected members of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), including its chief executive Bimal Gurung, resigned today from the administrative body in the trouble-hit Darjeeling hills with the GJM vowing to intensify the stir for a separate state.

All 12 parties operating in the Hills, which took part in GJM sponsored June 22 meeting in the hills, have already chose to boycott the government sponsored all-party meeting, which is to be presided by state home secretary.

He said the GTA has been turned into a "farce" by the West Bengal government and the GJM and the people of the hills will fight for the single agenda of a separate Gorkhaland. The formation of GTA came after five years of intense agitation.

Giri had stated on Thursday, "We have made a decision to resign from the GTA".

Except pharmacies, all other shops, hotels and restaurants have been remained closed for the past 11 days. The GJM is seeking Central government intervention saying it will only hold talks with the Union government. The all-party meeting also demanded immediate withdrawal of all para-military forces.

GTA replaced the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council, which was formed in 1988 with the same objective of giving the Nepali-speaking community some autonomy. Sikkim's ruling party SDF on Thursday also passed a resolution, supporting the Gorkhaland demand, at an event chaired by Chamling. "I can only say other states should not interfere in the internal matters of this one".

Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling has come out in support of the demand for a separate Gorkhaland, to be carved out of hill areas in West Bengal.

As normal life continued to be crippled, the GJM yesterday offered a 12-hour "window" on June 23 to schools to evacuate students safely to Siliguri and Rongpo.

He recalled that Sikkim Assembly had passed a resolution in 2011 seeking “a permanent solution to the pressing and longstanding problem of the people of Darjeeling hills”.
